More about the Molecule

Corticotropin releasing factor receptor type 1 popularly known as CRF1 is the protein we are referring to as the mystery misery molecule here. Even though this has made way for drugs that can be formulated to control this protein, but the research is at its initial stage. It is necessary to understand the origin, findings and the purpose of all the elements of this discovery.

The study relates to the observation of the 3D structure of a kind of hormone receptor. Molecules found superficially on and around cells that help in binding hormones are hormone receptors. If the binding is successful, then it can lead to making adjustable changes in the behavior of cells. In this case, the study is about CRF1 that is perceived to play an important role in the reaction to stress.

A possible drug target so that depression and anxiety can be treated is why CRF1 is in the news. As mentioned earlier, designing impactful drugs is not a significant research in the near future. But scientists have come across this molecule, which at least initiates this research to the next step.

The Discovery

Heptares Therapeutics, a medical company from Hertfordshire, undertook the task of using one of the world’s most impactful x-ray machines to reveal details of the brain’s pituitary gland. This gland is a small endocrine organ that plays a vital role in various vital functions in our body. It is also termed as the ‘Master Gland’, since it directs other glands and organs in the process of hormone production.

The pituitary gland controls depression, anxiety and stress by releasing chemicals. However, with the recent research, the discovery shifts to CRF1 found on the outer membranes of the pituitary cells, which are apparently responsible for triggering the emotional responses of stress.

The motive is for experts to create probable drug therapies to avoid the effects of CRF1 in a better manner. This would further lead to relieving the symptoms of stress related issues.


CRF1 resides around the pituitary cells and successfully detects the molecules related to depression by the hypothalamus, which is an important portion of the brain that produces hormones to control the different moods of a person.

So why not research the protein’s original structure and detect areas to be targeted by new drugs, eventually disabling it. This will create a sensation in the field of science and will mark a further step towards uprooting stress from its core.? Studying the structure of the transmembrane domain in detail is a step closer towards another development in the field of science.

This research method can also be used to analyze molecules in type 2 diabetes and to develop a drug that can be taken orally instead of injections.

It is evident that this research is still in its initial stage, but is worth to explore further for future drug development. And the process has begun; other findings in this field will soon take place positively.
